This item was taken from the IEEE Periodical ' Signal analysis of direction-selective mechanisms for vision ' The nature of the signals in motion detection mechanisms similar to the ones found in biological vision systems are investigated. Both excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms are considered. A basis feature of biological systems is that of robustness, i.e. deviations from the model should not greatly affect performance. Convenient signal parametric representations to achieve robustness, tuning and contrast independence are discussed.<>
