Generation and compression of frequency modulated pulses from a relativistic BWO

This item was taken from the IEEE Conference ' Generation and compression of frequency modulated pulses from a relativistic BWO ' A concept of using a helically corrugated waveguide for compression of frequency modulated microwave pulses in order to realize multi gigawatt RF radiation using microwave sources that are presently highly developed is demonstrated. Results of PIC code KARAT simulations of a Cherenkov-type relativistic BWO combining high efficiency with sufficient frequency tunability are presented. A 75 ns X-band pulse from the simulated BWO producing a maximum power of about 800 MW and 5 % frequency modulation can be compressed in a helical waveguide into a pulse of about 2 ns width with 9.3 GW of peak power.
