This item was taken from the IEEE Periodical ' The design, performance and status of the CLEO III silicon detector and low noise electronics ' The Cornell Electron Storage Ring is being upgraded to produce luminosities in excess of 10/sup 33/ cm/sup -2/s/sup -1/. To take full advantage of the physics access the machine will provide, we will perform a major upgrade of the CLEO detector including the construction of a new silicon vertex detector. In this paper we describe the status of the design, development and prototyping for the silicon project.
